Gweilo targets maiden podium in Noakes Sydney Gold Coast

The 2020/21 Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore champions return to defend their crown.

Gweilo co-owners Matt Donald and Chris Townsend have packed a lot into the last three years.

After buying the TP52 from New Zealand in 2018, Donald and Townsend immersed themselves in Australia's offshore racing scene.

Their Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race debut came shortly after Gweilo arrived in Sydney, and the pair made an immediate impact, finishing seventh across the line and fifth on IRC.

That was followed by a fourth-place finish on handicap in the 2019 race and a podium finish is a clear goal for 2021.

Having been crowned champions of the 2020/21 Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore and CYCA Ocean Racing Yachts Persons of the Year, Donald and Townsend have established their reputation as ones to watch.

With Townsend unable to compete in this year's Noakes Sydney Gold Coast, we caught up with Donald to delve into the pair's transformation from newcomers to perennial challengers.
